Welcome to Our Class Post

Hi, Spiritual Livers! We have begun our discussion of Barbara Brown Taylor's book, An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith. Taylor is a graduate of Emory University and Yale Divinity School. She was ordained in 1984 and began her ministry at All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta. She now holds the Harry R. Butman Chair in Religion and Philosophy at Piedmont College in Demorest, GA, and is Adjunct Professor of Spirituality at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur. She is the author of 12 books.

An Altar in the World reached #27 on the New York Times Bestseller List in 2009. In her book she encourages us to reclaim the physicality of our faith. "The whole world is the House of God," she writes, and "the meaning of life can be found in the everyday activities, accidents, and encounters of life."

Class members are invited to use this blog to post their thoughts on the book, as well as recommend sites to visit out in the world, post photographs of nature, or otherwise keep in touch.

  2. Well Kathleen, good for you. This will be great to keep up with our favorite Sunday School class. Judy and I are in Blue Ridge most every weekend with her elderly (just a little older than me) parents. We miss you guys but one day we'll be like the prodigal couple and come back home. In the meantime, I picked up a book at the St. Phillips Thrift Store for a dollar. It's "The Sermon on the Mount" by an Englishman, Dr. Emmet Fox, written in 1934, and is one of the most enlightening books I've had the Providential guidance to read. It really explains the meaning behind both the Beatitudes and The Lord's Prayer. I highly recommend it. I'm into the fourth week of a 12 week program called "The Truth Project." You can check it out on the Web and we're holding it on Tuesday evenings at the Church. So, I look forward to the succes of your blog and in the immortal words of Tiny Tim . . God Bless us All . . . Jack

  3. Hi Kathleen!

This is a great idea! I love your blog - and you are so hip to start one for our class. :) Doug and I do want to be back involved in this great class. We are going to Texas this weekend, so hopefully we can be back on board in the middle of this month. I purchased the book at church while I was there getting Whitney from preschool a few weeks ago, and I got one of the last of only a few left. We miss everyone!! Anne

  5. Jack, thanks for the tip on the Emmet Fox book. I tried to get us to read an Emmet Fox book years ago, but he was nixed by the Christian Ed office, if you can believe that. We'll take you and Judy back whenever we can get you!

Anne, same goes for you and Doug. Come when you can.

  6. Laura, try this: Log on, then click "New Post" up on the right. Then click "Add an Image from Your Computer," then click "Browse" and pick your photo. Choose a layout and a size, then click "Upload Image." Then you ought to be able to post it. I would particularly love to see you post the photo you have with the blue water and pink oleanders, as well as the one with the zig zagging sand diagonal.
